- Abstract
This article presents an explanatory analysis of local government experiences of electronic and in person participation, in Catalonia. The analysis focuses on a database set up by the authors. Several political variables that characterise the municipalities (and which are usually not taken into account in this kind of analysis) as well as socio-economic variables have been examined. The aim is to carry out a quantitative study complementary to the more frequent case studies on electronic participation. In the article the characteristics of the processes and mechanisms of participation are described and the following explanatory variables are analysed: population size, Mayor's political party, abstentionism, age, income and level of education as average values of the municipal area. The model proved to be appropriate for towns with over 20,000 inhabitants but not for those with a population of less than 20,000, with the latter group having very few participatory activities. Population size is the most influential variable although the Mayor's political party and the level of abstentionism also exert a certain influence.
