- Title
“The Jekyll and Hyde of the Atomic Age”: The Incredible Hulk as the Ambiguous Embodiment of Nuclear Power.
- Authors
CAPITANIO, ADAM
- Abstract
The author demonstrates how the Robert Louis Stevenson novella "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was based upon emerging scientific discourses as well as Victorian ideologies of power. He mentions that its successor, the comic book "The Incredible Hulk," also focused on anxiety over scientific discoveries and technological devices through a narrative that literally embodies them. He mentions that, by embodying atomic power in the form of the Hulk, the comic helped lessen concern about atomic power and reassured the audience of the value of individual heroic efforts.
