The article focuses on higher exposure to nicotine, cotinine, tobacco-related carcinogens and volatile organic compounds associated with water pipe smoking. Topics discussed include the 73-fold increase in nicotine among others found among participants of a study on the risks associated with water pipe smoking, the potential for nicotine dependance among water pipe smokers and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data on the use of hookahs among young adults.
