- Abstract
China has a long tradition of humanism, but the term humanism has been subject to various translations, discussions and debates since it came into China as a translated Western concept. Throughout the twentieth century, humanism has been such a frequently discussed and debated theoretical concept that it was inevitable to find it represented in modern Chinese literature. From 2015 onward, domestic Chinese humanities scholars and overseas sinologists have commemorated the centenary of the New Culture Movement (NCM), an event playing an important role in the history of Chinese modernity. In order to keep commemorating this event, one has to reflect on the significant role played by humanism in the NCM. The present article provides a genealogy of this term before dealing with the significance of humanism in the NCM. The essay argues that apart from its revolutionary spirit and pioneering role, NCM has contributed to the grand narrative of global humanism.
