- Abstract
Objective Until now, no information has been available either on the prevalence of hepatitis C (HGV) among risk groups, and in the general population or on risk factors of transmission of HGV in Yemen. This study was therefore carried out to determine the prevalence rate of HGV among patients with chronic infections of HBV , HCV and HIV and potential risk factors of contracting HGV infection. Methods From July 2007 to July 2008 , patients were selected randomly and information was collected by standard questionnaire; serum samples were collected and tested for human HGV IgG by commercially available ELISA technique. The study included 360 chronic patients,240 (66.7%) with HBV,60 (16.7%) with HCV,and 60(16.7%) with HIV. Results The crude prevalence rate of HGV was 5. 6% ,female specific rate was 7. 7% and male specific rate was 5%. There was a trend towards increased levels of HGV infection with the third decade of life (10% ). There was a significant association between HGV infection and history of: tattoo (RR = 4. 89) , and surgery (RR = 3. 2). The highest accompanied prevalence rate of HGV occurred with HCV (13. 3% ) ,but lower rates occurred in HBV patients (3. 3% ) and HIV patients (6. 7%). Conclusion It can be concluded from this study that HGV virus is circulating in the risk groups and in the community in general Yemen, and there is a possibility that this virus may at some time become epidemic if preventive measures are not applied. The risk of exposure to HGV increases with advancing age ,and sig~ nificant risks of contracting HGV through parenteral transmission.
