- Abstract
Following the turbulent changes that swept the world after the collapse of the bipolar system towards the end of the last century, there was a drastic change in perceiving the notion of security and the security environment. The changes were mostly manifested in the Euro- Atlantic Region, respectively on the grounds of Europe where the confrontation between the ideological opponents was most evident. Caught by the newly created situation NATO and the EU focused towards moderate the initial rush of the aspirations of yesterday's enemies towards NATO and EU membership. For this purpose, both NATO and the EU focused mainly on the reforms in the overall social system of former ideological enemies, thus the focus of reform was put on the security sector, rule of law, judiciary, and internal affairs. For this purpose, the Euro-Atlantic Structures developed a range of mechanisms focused on strengthening regional cooperation, promoting good neighborly relations, the increase mutual trust and cooperation in all fields, and especially in military cooperation. The NATO focus was put mostly on the reforms in the field of security and defense; while the EU focuses on democratic processes, rule of law, internal affairs, and judiciary. Today, the more tangible current regional processes and initiatives for cooperation in the Euro-Atlantic area are the following: The Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA), Partnership for Peace, Euro- Atlantic Cooperation Council, The South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP), Regional Cooperation Council (successor of the Stability Pact for SEE), Forum of Ministers of Defense of SEE (SEDM), Steering Group on Security Cooperation in SEE (SEE GROUP), Clearinghouse for SEE - Forum for Defense Cooperation in the Western Balkans, US-Adriatic Charter, and others.
