- Abstract
This document discusses metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) and the use of extracorporeal treatments (ECTRs) as a therapy for this condition. The authors highlight the lack of a mathematical model in the literature that describes the complex effect of ECTRs in MALA. They then present a comprehensive computational model that simulates the correction of acidosis in MALA using different ECTRs. The simulation results suggest that conventional hemodialysis (cHD) is more effective than continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) for treating MALA. The authors argue that mathematical modeling can be a useful tool for comparing the performance of different ECTRs and refining guidelines for the use of dialysis in treating MALA.
