- Abstract
The hospital system is a major consumer of healthcare resources. Its functions restore health, prevent disability, and in many cases are life-saving. Due to its mission and social position, the hospital is the mainstay of medical care and a factor that determines the public attitude and opinion on health care. Bulgaria spends much of its limited resources on hospital care. Moreover, the hospital care sector is relatively large as a share of total health care costs, while the share of outpatient care costs is the smallest in the EU. The present study aims to carry out a comparative analysis of the activity of the hospitals of the medical establishments in Bulgaria for the period 2014-2018. Overall, the number of hospital beds in Bulgaria is large and increasing over the last 15 years, contrary to the EU-wide trend. This is due to the large expansion of the private sector, both in the number of hospitals and in the capacity respectively. At the same time, the number of public hospitals is decreasing.
