The article focuses on the Chamorro place name Bijia in Guam which has evolved in the toponymy Vigía which means sentinel in Spanish. The toponymy is examined based on several historical records including manuscripts and citations in former Spanish colonies in the Americas and near Guam, extant names in these areas and a study by scholar Francis Warren about the Vigía in Zamboanga in the Philippines. The Vigías established throughout Guam for defense are described.
