- Abstract
The article presents two investigative studies that explore the adolescent parenting among Navajo adolescent women. First study explored teenage parenting among a sample of women in relation to factors posited as significant for determining parenting competence. The investigation was conducted in a rural, northeastern Arizona community located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. Seventeen parenting Navajo females in the age group of 16 to 19 comprised the sample. Results revealed that general determinants of parenting competence like indices measuring psychosocial adjustment and support from spouse/partner and informal network members, might inform greater understanding of parenting among Navajo teens. Second investigation utilized qualitative techniques to obtain understanding of Navajo adolescent mothers' perceptions of factors associated with parenting competence. Eight teenage mothers, who ranged in age from 16 to 19, participated in the investigation. Results provided a rich representation of the young mothers' experiences, the ecological contexts within which they were parenting, and the manner by which specific maternal differences emerged. Across both investigations, extreme within group diversity among the young mothers was evident.
