- Abstract
This article, titled "Praxis in Action: Example Mini-Research Project," discusses an assignment within a larger unit that explores Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God through the lens of queer theory. The unit culminates in a writing assessment where students apply a queer lens to a literary element of the text. Prior to this activity, students learn about the historical and creative influence of the Harlem Renaissance and practice reading for queer characters and desires in texts. As part of their research, students are asked to find a member of the LGBTQIA+ community from the Harlem Renaissance or an event that occurred during that time period and contributed to queer history. They must create a presentation that includes relevant background information, the person's role or the impact of the event, and their contributions to the artistic and cultural age. The students are also encouraged to make connections between their research and Their Eyes Were Watching God. The article provides a rubric for evaluating the students' work.
