- Abstract
The purpose of this research was to determine the profile of students in the School of Sociology at the University of Zulia, in terms of their competences (capacity and aptitude) and personal self-determination (autonomy and self-regulation). This was a non-experimental, descriptive, field study. The proportional sample consisted of 135 students out of a total of 400 studying the first three semesters in the major, all under the age of 20; they were surveyed randomly. A questionnaire with closed questions was applied, whose reliability was 0.91 according to the test-retest method. The results made it possible to conclude that participants manifest their competences while integrating their capacities and aptitudes to achieve good academic performance. In terms of personal self-determination, their actions determine their own destiny, even when their expectations of results could be imprecise.
