- Abstract
The article presents information on study types in medical research. Medical research is classified into primary and secondary research. While secondary research summarizes available studies in the form of reviews and meta-analyses, the actual studies are performed in primary research. The three main areas include basic medical research, clinical research, and epidemiological research. The basic one comprises of animal experiments, cell studies, biochemical, genetic and physiological investigations, and studies on the properties of drugs and materials. Clinical studies involve both interventional and noninterventional studies. The focus in epidemiological studies is to investigate the distribution and historical changes in the frequency of diseases and their causes.
