- Title
Marian Anderson and "Sonic Blackness" in American Opera.
- Authors
Eidsheim, Nina Sun
- Abstract
An essay is presented on discourse surrounding black voice in opera. It is suggested that while it is no longer socially acceptable to make distinctions based on skin color or speech, it is still seen as acceptable to identify and assess blackness in vocal timbre. According to the author, Americans' perceptions of black voices are informed by historic beliefs about black peoples' bodies. Topics discussed include opera singer Marian Anderson, ethnosympathy, and racialized casting in opera.
