- Abstract
The subject of research for this scientific study is the contribution and influence of Saxon mining, metallurgy and coinage on the development and rise of the Serbian medieval country in the period from the 13th to 16th century. With the coming of the Saxons from Transylvania during the reign of the Nemanjic dynasty, new mining centres were formed while the old Roman-Byzantine mines were restored. Exploitation of rich deposits of silver, gold, copper and lead led to the formation of cities and a new aristocratic class, merchants and free citizens, which was marked by political, economic and religious freedom within Serbian-Byzantine society. Manufacturing workshops and mints represented a source of financial independence to the Serbian rulers in spreading commerce and exchanging goods in the area of south-eastern and middle Europe. During the reign of the Ottomans, the existing mining system became a part of the Ottoman system with acknowledged customary, hereditary rights, while mining was stagnating, which was a result of an unwieldy and inefficient tax and administrative system.
