- Abstract
Suicidal ideation is a public health concern in many countries. There is need for robust research to establish factors associated with suicidal ideation among in-school adolescents. In Trinidad and Tobago, considerable level of research has been conducted on suicidal ideation among adolescents. However, more research is still needed in order to establish and profile factors associated with suicidal ideation among in-school adolescents. The objective of the study was to determine factors associated with suicidal ideation among in-school adolescents in Trinidad and Tobago. Analysis of the secondary data from the 2011 Trinidad and Tobago Global School-Based Health Survey was conducted using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression at 95% confidence interval. The study recruited a total of 2,811 students. The results showed that the proportion of students who reported suicidal ideation was 16.3% and female (19.3%) students reported a higher (p < 0.001) proportion than males (13.3%). Having understanding parents, history of bullying, being of male gender and being 15 years of age were negatively associated with suicidal ideation, while food security, anxiety, lack of close friends, loneliness, history of attack, involvement in a fight, truancy, currently smoking, alcohol abuse, current alcohol use and marijuana use were all positively associated with suicidal ideation. Therefore, issues relating to family and parental support structure, age and gender, violence among peers and substance abuse should be considered when planning and implementing public health intervention programs against suicidal ideation among in-school adolescents in Trinidad and Tobago.
