- Abstract
The article explores why sentences have increased through an examination of national policies and sentencing laws in Oklahoma. It examines women as a minority in the criminal justice system and considers general themes in the profile of the female offender. It addresses the national increase in female incarceration in the 1980s and examines the particularities in Oklahoma. It offers solutions including increasing funding to mental health programs and treating nonviolent crimes less harshly.
