- Authors
Husband, Aaron K.
- Abstract
This article explores the concept of neighborly love in Genesis 2:18-25 and its significance in Old Testament ethics. It argues that this passage establishes an ethic of neighborly love, which is often attributed to Leviticus 19:18. The article discusses the idyllic nature of Genesis 1-2 and the role of humanity in spreading God's presence. It also examines the significance of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and the problem of solitude in Genesis 2:18-25. The text further explores the role of women as helpers and argues for a gender-neutral understanding of the passage. It suggests that the passage has broader implications beyond marriage and gender ideology, emphasizing the importance of loving and helping others. The article also challenges negative views of singleness and highlights the value of community and relationships. It concludes by stating that the true root of neighborly love can be found in the pre-sin human interaction described in Genesis 2:18-25.
