A literary criticism is presented of the novel "Caleb Williams," by William Godwin. The construction of a narrative is considered in relation to empiricist philosophy and ideals of the Enlightenment. It is suggested that Godwin's novel argues against coherent narratives as being artificial and epistemologically dangerous.
