- Abstract
This study aims to analyze the sediment balance in Suape Bay, located on the southern coast of Pernambuco, close to the Suape Industrial Port Complex, in order to define the magnitude and direction of sediment transport, to locate sites where erosion occurs and deposition. This analysis was made from two bathymetric surveys obtained over an interval of thirteen years, 1994 and 2007. The data made it possible to determine the depths and morphology of the bottom bed, in addition to making thematic maps, bathymetric profiles and cubing, showing that the erosion rate was higher than the sedimentation rate. The volume of sediments that left the system was 1,331,236.46m³, with only 192,481.27m³ of material entering the system, showing that Suape Bay has a negative sedimentary balance. This work proposes three hypotheses that explain the cause of the negative sedimentary balance, such as what are the direct relations with anthropic actions, which modify how the internal currents of Suape Bay circulate and derive the coast: decrease in sediment input; imbalance due to dredging works and; irregular occupation of the beach strip.
