- Abstract
The surface roughness has been identified as one of the most undesirable characteristic of the machining operations. The influence on the surface roughness, Ra, from a variation of the following three parameters was studied: the feed rate, the cutting speed and the depth of cut. The effects of these cutting parameters onto the surface roughness have been investigated by forming a mathematical model of the relation between the cutting parameters and the surface roughness. For the experiments three sets of tool material-workpiece material combinations were used. The mathematical model that describes the surface roughness equation has been established from experimental data. This technique allows the best set of machining parameters to be determined in order to estimate the coefficients of the surface roughness. The performance of the model has been tested for different cutting conditions. The experimental results showed that the model was succesful in predicting of the surface roughness. The predicting values are very close to the actual measured ones for the cutting conditions. The roughness increased with an increasing feed rate and the depth of cut and decreasing tool radius. Since the cutting speed values for HSS tools are not high enough, the surface roughness seemed to be independent of the cutting speed for the given cutting conditions.
