The article presents a case study of the challenges faced by public university employees in relation to their use of social media as well as their free speech rights in the U.S. Topics discussed include challenges presented to Journalism Professor David Guth of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas because of his tweet in response to the Navy Yard, Washington D.C. shooting, employment actions taken on the basis of employees' speech and the concept of academic freedom in the U.S.
