- Title
Cautious Optimism: Renewable Energy in South Africa as a Sustainable Model for the Region.
- Authors

- Abstract
There is a long-held assumption that renewable energy is too costly for large-scale applications in developing countries where reducing extreme poverty is the most immediate concern. This conventional view is slowly eroding, however, as renewable energy is rapidly expanding in the markets of the developing world. South Africa is emerging as one of the biggest contributors, and its success challenges the traditional notion that a strong economic future is solely dependent on growth through fossil fuels. Though not without its challenges, South Africa's innovative policy approach to encouraging renewable energy has been remarkably successful in generating optimism from global investors in just over five years. Given its regional geopolitical significance, the success of renewable energy development in South Africa is particularly important, as it could provide a model for implementing more sustainable energy choices across the African continent and for other emerging markets worldwide.
