- Abstract
After India became independent as of 1947, Turkish-Indian relations have followed a distant approach due to Turkey's negative reaction towards the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) led by India. Besides this permanent impression of Turkey in the country, her relations with Pakistan would also affect the relations negatively. In spite of these issues, there were several political, cultural, and economic developments towards the convergence of the two countries. For the purpose of improving the economic relations of the two countries, commercial treaties were signed and put into force between 1953 and 1973. However, the economic relations would not follow a speedy development. Indeed, India had the 48th rank in the foreign trade list of Turkey in mid-1980's. In such an atmosphere, the economic relations started to develop with Prime Minister Turgut Özal's official visit, with trials to continue this positive air in the 1990's. Nevertheless, on the threshold of 2000's, these belated economic relations would bear their own problems. Hence, they would not be able to keep their stability. This study aims to shed light on the Turkish-Indian relations from the foundation of the independent India by means of economic dimensions on the basis of archival sources, periodicals, research books, and interviews.
