Bose, Meena
- Abstract
The article examines the historical role of the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) since the organization's creation in 1942. It examines how the U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN has gone from being an apparent figurehead during the Cold War to a prominent member of the U.S. President's foreign policy team in the 21st century. Other topics include the role of politician Edward R. Stettinius, Jr., in the creation of the post in 1945, how U.S. President George H.W. Bush used Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering as a foreign diplomat in the UN Security Council during the Gulf War, and how John D. Negroponte facilitated relations between the U.S. and UN during the Iraq War.
