- Abstract
Environmental conditions in the Hudson Bay Lowlands are among some of the most demanding in the forested regions of northern North America. Prior to archaeological investigations in the 1980s along the lower course of the Severn River, the archaeological potential of the Hudson Bay Lowlands was estimated to be seasonal at best and generally marginal in nature. Site surveys and testing, combined with a more critical reading of pertinent ecological and environmental data have revealed that the Hudson Bay Lowlands did in fact offer the opportunity for human groups to live there year-round over the course of at least the past 2000-3000 years. An in depth knowledge of the seasonal availability of various mammal, fish and migratory waterfowl was essential to the successful exploitation of the region and this ethno-science base was developed millennia ago.
