The article comments on a study by R. J. Levine and colleagues which demonstrates an important role for placental-derived soluble antiangiogenic factors as mediators of the pathologies associated with preeclampsia. According to the authors, the findings have implications for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of preeclampsia. The paper showed that soluble endoglin impairs binding of transforming growth factor-β to its receptors.
