The article discusses highlights of a panel discussion held during the June 2016 American Medical Association (AMA) annual meeting. Topics explored include the introduction of policies that encourage use of non-opioids for pain treatment, the commitment of AMA to addressing the opioid addiction problem in the U.S. acknowledged by AMA chair-elect Patrice A. Harris, and a study which focused on the administrative health claims of privately insured surgical and nonsurgical patients.
