- Abstract
The article reviews reports of presumed or confirmed nesting attempts by naturalized populations of black-hooded parakeet (Nandayus nenday) in Florida. Presumed and confirmed nests in Florida in 2000 to 2002 and 2009 were reported as 55% in palm snags, 40% in wooden utility poles and 3% in slash pine snags. Four species of palms have served as nesting substrate including Mexican fan palm, Cuban royal palm and cabbage palm. Nesting activity took place during spring and summer although active nests were observed all throughout the periods except August and September. The parakeets were also observed to successfully defend their nest cavities from other bird species. The study concludes that the birds' impact to native species and habitat in Florida appear to be negligible.
