- Abstract
A helpful strategy, the research design conference, is seldom used by investigators, research teams, or graduate students because it is relatively unknown. A design conference is a resource in which the primary goal is proposal development and refinement. It is a meeting of limited duration between the investigator and a specified number of individuals who have expertise in the research process. During this meeting, a dialogue occurs between the investigator and the experts leading to clarification of the problem and methodology. Such a conference can be a valuable mechanism which can be employed at any stage in proposal development. The investigator may wish to schedule several conferences during the development of a research study. Goals for the use of a design conference will vary depending on the stage of proposal development. Early use of a design conference may be for brainstorming or identification of problem areas, while later use may be for general review and refinement. The purpose of this article is to outline the organizational steps of a research design conference and the benefits that can be derived from its use.
