- Abstract
This article presents a brief overview of the 12th SABRAO Congress of January 2012, held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and the selected papers in this special issue. The society for the advancement of breeding research in Asia and Oceania (SABRAO) was established in 1968 and represents one of the few Asian plant breeding networks, and breeding networks with a focus on developing countries. Conventional plant breeding was well represented during this conference, and several presenters highlighted the impact of new varieties and provided welcome advice to the next generation of plant breeders. Several important insights were also provided from senior breeders or managers who had worked in the private sector and from seed companies. Many successful examples of marker-assisted selection were presented, especially for abioitic stresses. Common themes for breeding programmes were the importance of exploiting novel germplasm to broaden the genetic base, improving breeding efficiency using DNA markers or new experimental designs or data analysis methods ("breeding informatics"), and the public sector learning from the private sector. Other presentations included the importance of breeding for nutritional quality, client-oriented breeding which involved farmers to develop new varieties from the initial stage, and the importance of downstream systems to maximize the adoption of promoting new varieties. Presentations describing cutting edge genomics research and technology and their potential application in modern plant breeding were also made.
