- Abstract
The article probes the urban legend and pseudoscience popularized by the movie "2012," and how teachers can use popular interest in teaching students skepticism and critical thinking. It explores the Long Count numbering system of the Mayan calendar. It relates the Mayan mythology with the actual positioning of the Sun in the skies during the winter solstice of December 2012. It discusses the wobble-like motion of the Earth around its axis known as precession. It also presents a calendar of astronomically related events and visible planets during the said period. Moreover, it features questions that can be used by teachers in measuring the students' comprehension of the topics.
