- Abstract
This article reflects on the evolution of orthodontics over the past fifty years in the UK and provides a glimpse into the future of the field. It highlights the changes in societal perception of orthodontics, from being seen as a medical necessity to a desire for aesthetic outcomes with psychosocial benefits. The article also discusses advances in materials and products, such as the transition from metal bands to bonding teeth and the development of aesthetic brackets and wires. It explores the integration of technology in orthodontics, including clear aligner systems, digital orthodontics, and the use of artificial intelligence for treatment monitoring. The article concludes by addressing the challenges faced by the NHS in meeting patient needs and the impact of orthodontic treatment on patients' confidence and quality of life.
