- Abstract
The quantity of resinous wood exploited in the county decreased by 29%, attracting significant decreases in the number of active companies in the field and the number of employees in the period 2008-2016. During this period, the price of spruce timber auctioned has kept pace with world market trends. The price of timber adjudication has increased steadily, but at a higher rate than the starting price, so the difference between them has gradually diminished. The opening of new large wood procesing companies in neighboring counties has led to increased competition on raw materials. Log wood has reached the wood procesing firms in Harghita at prices 1.4 to 4 times higher. The increase in the price of timber adjudication has led to price increases throughout the processing chain. The local timber and furniture market are the segments that supported the conifer wood market, even if the prices were very high. In the period 2012-2016, the price of spruce timber, regardless of the type of processing used, has increased from 1.2 to 1.6 times. The exports of spruce timber are close to half the volumes registered in 2015 and a third of the 2013-2014 peaks. A lot of spruce logs are still being exported, with small capital gain (the price of the spruce log can be 4-5 times lower than the finished products). Wood processing companies from Harghita have diversified their products (wooden houses, furniture, binals, wall panels, briquettes and pellets, timber, logs, firewood, etc.) and have increased the price of finished products to offset the increase in raw material prices.
