- Abstract
Depressive disorders are amongst the most common mental health disorders worldwide. Clinical studies showed that when not well controlled, these disorders could cause various cardiovascular complications, including heart failure (HF). The pathogenetic mechanisms by which depression damages the cardiac structures and function have not been fully elucidated so far. It is very likely that some concomitant cardiovascular risk factors, found with higher incidence among patients with depressive disorders have significant role: smoking, alcohol abuse, unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle, dyslipidemias, obesity. These risk factors, in turn, are associated with higher incidence of arterial hypertension and coronary artery disease – leading causes for HF. Prolonged treatment with some antidepressants could also cause cardiovascular changes and impaired cardiac function.
