- Abstract
The article details how nineteenth-century English member of parliament for Northampton Charles Bradlaugh fought to have religious barriers to the oaths of office for Parliament changed or removed after his election to office in 1880. He was a stated atheist and the matter of his oath became a political debate between Prime Minister William E. Gladstone and his Liberal party against the Tories.
