- Abstract
The article discusses the foundation of the Red Cross movement. Swiss businessman Henri Dunant witnessed the 1859 Battle of Solferino in Northern Italy. In response to the massive battle casualties, Dunant organized local residents to provide water, food, and medical aid. In 1862 Dunant wrote an outline of his ideas that non-combatant volunteer services should provide services to wounded on both sides of military conflicts. In 1863, the the Public Welfare Association in Geneva, Switzerland created the Red Cross movement.
