- Abstract
The article discusses the the administration of mid-19th century British prime minister Robert Peel. It examines the divisions within Peel's Tory government, the administration's attempts to repeal the Corn Laws and their relationship to the Irish famine of 1845, and Peel's endorsement of free trade. According to the article, many Tory members of Parliament supported the Corn Laws as a protection of the economic interests of their constituents. The article discusses the formation of groups known as the Anti-League and the Anti-Corn Law League. The article also discusses opposition to Peel's tariff reforms by British politicians Lord George Bentinck and Benjamin Disraeli.
