- Abstract
Recently, a variety of early intervention programs have been developed and the effects of those programs have been reported. However, it has been reported that many of these programs are difficult for parents to implement at home. The Swedish early intervention program, Intensive Learning (IL), is a comprehensive program founded on the principles of applied behavior analysis and consists of 13 areas of exercises. In this program, therapists make individual support plans for children according to the level of their development and provide exercises that parents and preschool teachers can practice. Here, we report the case of a male infant with a pervasive developmental disorder, where his parent successfully continued the practice of IL for 2 years. We discuss the factors that contributed to the parent’s successful implementation IL at home, despite the significant burden. In this case, we first created a supportive environment for the parent to practice IL and encouraged her to maintain the program. At the same time, we supported the parent by making careful assessments of the child and collaborated with the parent and the preschool teachers so that the program would not be too much of a burden for the parent. As a result, the parent was able to continue the practice of IL with support from the therapist and the preschool teachers. We also confirmed the improvements in the child’s development. This case suggests that, in order for parents to continue the practice of IL at home, flexibility in adapting the program for each family and ongoing support for parents and community-based programs (collaboration with preschool teachers) are necessary.
