- Abstract
The article discusses the purpose of the unusual ritual of the scapegoat and its parallels in the ancient Near East. It further discusses about the Azazel, the ancient rite of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), a scapegoat was sent bearing the sins of the Jewish people; the High Priest sacrificed a bull as a sin offering on behalf of himself and his household; and goat for God, selected by lot before the bull offering, was sacrificed and its blood sprinkled in the Holy of Holies.
