- Abstract
The article reports that some developments in Massachusetts-based company XyEnterprise and Virginia-based company ScholarOne promise to provide new ways for corporate and commercial publishers to work with Extended Markup Language (XML) during the authoring and copyediting processes. The approaches expand the scope of XML in publishing settings, forms and their content. XyEnterprise announced the availability of a Microsoft InfoPath adapter for a variety of applications, including catalog creation and publishing, creation of marketing materials and data sheets, and technical collateral for products such as computer servers, aircraft and consumer products. The computer program IstEdit is designed to help scholarly publishers to move their XML conversion process from post-typesetting to pre-typesetting. The service complements ScholarOne's other Web-based publishing work flow services, which include the popular Manuscript Central peer-review system. These two implementations are quite different. One is in-house and the other is hosted, one is for marketing and the is other for journals. The similarity lies in the fact that both leverage Microsoft technology to expand the range of publishing applications that can be migrated from print-centric workflows to ones that are electronic-centric, supporting both online and print deliverables.
