- Abstract
The field of sports journalism has been well-established in Malaysia for a long time, as it plays a vital role in delivering sports coverage directly to the community. However, this field has received limited attention in terms of research. This study aims to describe the perspective and reflections of Astro Arena media practitioners on the sports journalism industry in Malaysia, with a specific focus on the coverage of the challenging 2020 Olympic Games. The objectives of this study are:to understand the perspective of media practitioners towards the field of sports journalism in Malaysia. It also seeks to examine the level of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety measures provided to media practitioners during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and c) to identify the challenges faced by Astro Arena in delivering news coverage during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. To achieve these objectives, an in-depth interview methodology was employed, with three respondents from the Astro Arena media station who were on duty during the Olympic Games. The study concludes that the overall state of the sports journalism field in Malaysia is lacking. The findings reveal that the SOPs and security measures implemented for Astro Arena media practitioners during the sports event were organized, thorough, and strict, without impeding their duties. This study underscores the need for greater attention and support for the field of sports journalism in Malaysia from various stakeholders, including the government and the media industry such as providing adequate resources and fostering skills and expertise in sports journalism.
