- Abstract
The article discusses the Padilla Advisory which evolved from the U.S. Supreme Court case Padilla v. Kentucky and requires defense attorneys to advise their clients of the potential consequences of a criminal conviction. The article also addresses the collateral consequence rule which does not require an attorney to give any advisory opinion. The legal doctrine of ineffective assistance of counsel is also examined. The impact of the Padilla ruling on a plea of guilty is also mentioned.
