The article explores the application of the definite article rule in the Bulgarian language. It identifies the functions of the rule on multiple levels as both a metonym and an metaphor for a range of concepts. The effect of the rule on the symbolic capital of orthography on ideologies about language and identity is discussed, as well as the opinion of both linguists and non-linguists on the deployment of the rule.
