- Authors
Gingeras, Ryan
- Abstract
The article discusses the dissolution of Ottoman rule in Ottoman Macedonia and the history of violence there through an examination of the history and 1903 destruction of the village of Smerdesh (on the present-day Albanian-Greek border). The author begins by explaining conflicts between Ottoman authorities and the Greek and Bulgarian Orthodox Church and their connection to the village, as well as the village's linguistic diversity. The connection between Smerdesh and the Bulgarian militant and radical Vasil Chakalarov is explained, as is his association with the Secret Macedonian Thracian Revolutionary Organization (TMORO), which wanted Ottoman Macedonia's independence. The way in which the TMORO insurgency led to Smerdesh's destruction is then outlined.
