- Abstract
[53] Topic & Comment article I Doing justice to an English as a lingua franca paradigm i in this journal provides a sceptical appraisal of a couple of years following the launch of the Center for English as a Lingua Franca (CELF) programme within Tamagawa University, Tokyo, Japan. However, even if extensively discussed in 2011 to distinguish broadly between four levels of proficiency within the English as a Foreign Language programme which preceded the CELF programme, CEFR and "Can Do" statements are no longer part of a central discourse at CELF. Monolingualism in English is not the norm nowadays, and in fact, this is the case concerning English instructors at CELF. For this reason, the CELF faculty development coordinators Brett Milliner (2015-2017) and subsequently Rasami Chaikul (2018 onwards) have organised monthly workshops for CELF faculty and staff, inviting scholars from both inside and outside the university.
