- Abstract
In sum, for the movement, the state elections were a case of one step forward in NSW and one step backwards in Victoria, thwarted by electoral statecraft that preserves the two party system. AS CANDIDATES, THE SUCCESSFUL TEALS WERE FEMALE, ARTICULATE, EDUCATED, WITH ESTABLISHED CAREERS AND A GOOD DEAL OF SELF-CONFIDENCE In a result that shook the Liberal party, New South Wales saw three teal victories (Allegra Spender, Sophie Scamps and Kylea Tink), Victoria two (Monique Ryan and Zoe Daniel) and Kate Chaney was elected in Western Australia. And like Victoria, NSW had election caps: donors can give no more than $7,000 to a registered party or "group of candidates", or $3,300 to an individual candidate. Labor, Green and minor party voters in New South Wales are increasingly opting to give preferences, but even at this election, only about 50 per cent did so.
