- Abstract
Research on teaching within the framework of educational psychology focuses on teaching effects on students' learning and includes mediating and contextual variables. Whereas general didactics and subject matter didactics also deal with content related decision making and with goal setting, educational psychology in the area of school teaching and learning is restricted to research on methods and media of instruction. Yet, the present analyses of international and German language standard publications on educational psychology reveals that neither a sufficiently consistent nor a conceptually well-ordered definition and classification of teaching methods is available. Propositions point towards discerning teaching methods from tasks and to subsume teaching acts to both. The benefit would be that the senseless recommendation to apply a multitude of teaching methods could be abandoned and that poorly scrutinized reinventions such as cognitive activation could receive a sound conceptual basis.
