- Abstract
The current monkeypox epidemic is a major public health concern as the global outbreak continues to grow. Human monkeypox is a zoonosis caused by monkeypox virus, belonging to the I Orthopoxvirus i genus and is a close relative of the variola virus. Human monkeypox is a zoonosis caused by monkeypox virus, belonging to the I Orthopoxvirus i genus and a close relative of the variola virus (smallpox).2 Monkeypox virus can be transmitted from humans by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding.
