- Title
On Poetry and Prayer.
- Authors
Barenblat, Rachel
- Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between poetry and prayer in Jewish worship. Particular focus is given to the author's experiences of being both a poet and a rabbi, and to the role of poetry in her spiritual practice. It is suggested that while poems may provide new and meaningful ways for worshipers to explore the themes of traditional Jewish liturgy, they are not a replacement for it. According to the author, her devotional poetry is most valuable to her as a process of connecting to God and considering seriously the words and ideas in the poem. Three devotional poems by the author are also presented.
